So things have been a little busy for me again with work...

Of course that means that things at home are of course also busy... (it's the way of this world, and my luck)

B is off to NYC again... Her Mom is back in the hospital, she's been there now for over a week, and this is the first chance B's had to get down there... Even though she hates going.... So she's stressed add to that that the stress of catching those stray kittens and the mom cat...

They even had found one of B's friends willing to take the mom cat in, while a permanent home was found... But instead the Cambridge animal control officers put her to sleep today... (They got an earfull I'm sure from B's freind who was looking forward to helping out like this).

Too much happening over the past week to get it all down but being the geek that I am, and wanting to support our local "Troopers", and our very own [livejournal.com profile] tk7602 (Also so I could finally get to see the new "armor" of his... Damn that looks like fun.) I went out to the midnight sale of the new Star Wars DVD release... I'll post some pictures later when I get them downloaded from my camera...

Now for a bit more work related stuff, I've been doing plain old sys-admin stuff for a while now so my web-fu is a little rusty, and I've been handed a somewhat new project for a dynamic web site. This sounds like fun and I want to try to make this as open-sourced / easy to manage & automate as possible... (Heh, nothing like try to make it easy...) but I'm not sure what the current best methods are, so if anyone wants to pipe up with a suggestiojn or three feel free.

I called this a "somewhat new project" because a previous version had been made by some students who are leaving that used IIS and MS-SQL.

The gist of this site will be a set of maps for shuttle routes around campus.
    There are multiple:
  • Pre-defined routes
  • Pre-defined stops on each route
  • Shuttles assigned to each route.

We'll need to be able to:
  • Define new routes
  • Delete old routes
  • Upload and Assign a map for each route
  • Modify the home page to reflct the current number of assigned routes
  • Add / Delete / Modify shuttles being tracked
  • Manage a shuttles status (Out Of service, In Service, Reserved)
  • Manage which shuttles are assigned to which routes
  • Manage the number and location for stops on each route.
  • Track the shuttles position via an IP assigned to a GPS reciver.
  • Calulate the estimated time of arrival at the next stop on it's route for each shuttle
  • Warning flags should be set for shuttles that are sitting idle in non designated stops
  • All management functions should be done through SSL web interface with personal certificates

For security the system should have:
  • Separate accounts for each user
  • Group assignment for account functions (Overall Admin, Route Management, Vehicle Management)
  • Changes should have an Undo/Roll-Back to help prevent user screw ups
  • Changes made by users should be logged
  • Logs should be automatically rotated and archived

Anything else you can think of?

Heh "Labor budget".... That's a good one....

No This is just a "We have this thing that's now broken, and the peopele who made it are gone, so fix it and make it right. If we juggle your schedule and other projects" kinda project that needs to be done, as my bosses boss put it: "our stake in the ground is when the snow starts to fly, that's when we need to have it working"...

Of copurese, it now being the end of september we could be seeing snow by mid novenmebr, that means I'll likely only have a month or so to do this in part time....

The documentation I've seen so far is a 6 page "Executive summary" type of thing that was dropped off for me friday afternoon... Little do they know I have a back door so I've already started looking for code snippets off the old server, plus access to the raw MS-SQL tables, So I can go looking for little things like the IP addr's of the GPS... But this was all done in .net and visual studio so I'm learning that environment
