Well I'm still at work
Oct. 21st, 2004 08:30 pmThanks to a not too clueful cow-orker....
We were scheduled to do a server upgrade today, I was out sick yesterday and we have been discussing this for weeks... He was supposed to have done a backup of the whole system.... Well thats not what he did...
He mounted the drives from another machine and ran a backup from the OTHER machine.... Ok so this got the user files, but it doesn't get the system files or files that are in use such as the database server app, and any open databases....
ARRRRGGGG!!!! If I hadn't relied on him doin that simple part of the job.... So when I get here to start it this morning... He's not here... Okay I had a couple of things to take care of quickly... when he does get here and I find out about the screwy backup job he did, I figure no problem we'll just get the small part he missed... Well the backup software isn't installed or configured for that machine directly, since it was originally only supposed to be their local backup server, but now it's a DB server as well... Sheesh....
At this point I do NOT trust the backup he ran and I spend most of the day getting the backup done correctly...
Then we get to swap the disks out and build the new array, but he doesn't have the install media for the OS, he has the new version and wants to upgrade.... ummm If we do that and the restore the file systems the versions of the files will be mis-matched and things would REALLY be screwed up....
So I have to run to the other side of campus and get the right disks (because I don't usually carry those around. I get the rebuild started and at this point I had to go meet B to say farewell for the weekened... I'm just so frustrated with this guy that I send him home andI'm here finishing it up by my self, but at least its going smoothly now.... (Except fr the fact that I'm starting to get hungry and need to think about dinner)...
