Satellite Hackers Charged Under DMCA

Seventeen defendants were indicted in all, but only six were charged under the criminal antidecryption provisions of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The 11 others were charged with breaking federal laws against conspiracy and manufacturing devices for the purpose of stealing satellite signals.

Where the hell is the theft here? Theft implies taking something away from somebody, thus dening them access to thier property. These people didn't stop any of the subscribers from reciving the satelite signals... They found a way to listen to publically broadcast signals, and then translated those signals into a viewable format. I think it says more about the price gouging that the communications/entertainment industires are partaking in, but then that gives them enough cash to have quite the influence over our elected representatives. So that they'll put these stupid law into effect.

If the satelite companies didn't want these people to listen to thier transmitions they shouldn't have transmitted them over the OPEN AIRWAYS. Oh wait they encrypted these transmitions; so that means people can't listen to them, and if you stick your head in the ground people can't see you either....
