Bar-Code Scanners
Sep. 23rd, 2003 05:03 pmWell Here's something I've never played with before "Hand Held Bar Code Scanners"....
We need to update our inventory tracking control and we want to look into what options are available, anyone have any good leads?
Basically we want to scan equipment as it's received noting the Serial #s and PO #'s, then as equipment is deployed we need to track our own asset tag numbers.
Any idea's?
Windows and Mac are the major platforms, with tie-ins to FileMaker, and possibly oracle databases...

Hmmmmm
Date: 2003-09-23 02:23 pm (UTC)I can't remember which program that was, plus it's for accountants, and I don't think it scans. but I DID find an awesome program for scanning books, and it's shareware. Try searching TuCows for Asset Tracking programs, get an idea of what's out there. Even if it's an accounting program, it might be modifiable for Inventory. You actually should be able to find something that does BOTH.
(My clients's software actually DOES that too, but again, it's built for internal assets, not inventory. You might also be able to utilize the firm's accounting software, I want to say Quickbooks has that, but again, I dunno about the scanning.)

Date: 2003-09-23 02:31 pm (UTC)Basically we already have the Asset Tracking as a combo of the FileMaker and Oracle databases, but the data is entered by hand from notes scrawled on the loading dock, and from deployment sheets that are typed up (when they remember) by part-time help...
(You can easily see where this devolves into occasional flurries of "what the F@#* happend to X")... :-)

Seems that it integrates with, according to the description, everything. What you might NEED, is the actual Manpower to INPUT everything you need into your database, and make sure it's working.
When I was a freshman in college I worked at Macy's entering barcodes so that the scanning program could work. It took YEARS to get it all. *grins*
I dunno, I seem to be focusing on EVERYTHING but what you say you need, mostly becuase I'd seen this package before. Plus the friggin scanners are EXPENSIVE! That's why I've been pausing before buying that book inventory software (but I think I'm going to order it tonight - it comes with a scanner wand, shaped like a kitty *silly grin*)
