Well this will only make sence to some of you who know about a certain university's student e-mail system....

But I just got mail from another friend, that they are finally going to shut down Lynx....

Back in the day we used to see if we could get enough people into the computer lab to cause that system to reject the sys admins from logging in since it could only handle a total of 32 simultaneous people logged in at one time.... (It was only slightly more of a challenge when they upgraded the system so that it could handle the unprecedented 64 simul logins....)

At first this wasn't much more than an over glorified bbs, that let us try to be a bit more organized.... But eventually they got e-mail working on it... (Heh the original programmer accidentally erased the source code for the systems e-mail, so instead of reloading it, he built the student e-mail out of the chat system... what a bad hack that was)

it will be missed. I'm still looking for a decent MUDD to play in.....

Lynx seems to still be working for me. Even though they said they were shutting it down Dec. 19th.

Heh, I didn't know you were on LJ.... I think they announced an earlier date so they could check on the ones still being used, and make sure they don't alienate anyone important... :-)

My most favoritest lynx -- y'know, because it was supposed to be *fast* -- experience was demonstrating to the system manager how to easilly get a root shell on the system. That was back when the whole system ran under a single UID (root's, of course) and users didn't have shell access.

Oops.

Oh well... The end of an era :-( I wonder if I still have my "In at the beginning" pencil around somewhere... I, too, remember trying to overload Lynx. I haven't checked my account in ages, mostly because it started not working properly soon after I graduated (and then I moved out of the area, and never bothered to get it fixed). My dad still uses his, though...

If Lynx is gone, are there still going to be alumni accounts somewhere?

Heh, Yeah one of my favorite "fake" account was for the Honorable Edward Bear (HoneyBear was the name of a teddy bear that one of the local SCA guys carried around with him at the time....)

Only if they can find a way for it to make money for them....

Feh... Most universities these days offer alumni accounts for free. Didn't NU get enough money from us when we were students?!!

Not from me they didn't... :-) Now the B&N got a lot of our money at the time (Though they had to split a buch of that with NU)... But I've been exacting my revenge and charging them $$$ for fixing their computers.... (Because it turns out they haven't found anyone else who seems to be able to do it) :-)
