So I was read the news today, oh boy....

About the fight Boston city hall is having with one of it's neighborhoods, and the following question comes to mind.... If snow covered streets is causing a parking problem and I kow it is, and they are going to pay extra to remove the objects people are using to "save" the sapces they shoveled by hand, then why doesn't the city just use that very same money to REMOVE THE SNOW ENTIRELY... Just use a loader instead of a plow and put it into a dump truck and haul it out of the way.... (Snow is mostly frozen water, dump it over at the water treatment plants. Move it to an unused field somewhere, pile it on the beach...) Just get it off the streets... Why is that so hard? Get these stupidly high piles of snow left by the plows out of the way.... It'll make things safer for the fire and police to get through, the residents wont have to fight over parking (any more than they do durring the spring summer and fall)... Everybody wins....

There was some amusing story a year or two ago about a blizzard in NY, where eventually the mayor (Guiliani at the time?) called Menino to ask, basically, "OK, where do you guys put it all?" (Presumably, in the original Newyawkish, it was "youse guys".)

I gather there's some issue with dumping snow from salted roads right back into the aquifer, but dumping in to the ocean, which comes handily pre-salted, is OK.

Fascinating! Yes, plowing better in the first place would be a much better solution - too bad they don't seem to have thought of that.
