RHEL is driving me nuts..... RPM seems to be locking up at every stage... I think I just want to completely re-install (In all my copious spare time of course....) and of course this is on a production server... I think I'm going to next ask the boss about getting us a spare machine to swap onto for these types of upgrades....

That's a known bug, one that has been very difficult to isolate and fix. What has worked for me is dropping down to single user mode, upgrading RPM itself, and rebuilding the RPM databases.
