I just saw the following bit on Slashdot:

Cutting out the Naughty Bits Ruled Illegal

An anonymous reader writes "Some of you may recall the lawsuit brought by several Hollywood directors against companies which edit movies for sex, language, and violence. The companies would trade consumers an off-the-shelf DVD for an edited one. Well, the CBC is reporting that Judge Richard P. Matsch has found that this practice violates US copyright law, and 'decreed on Thursday in Denver, Colo., that sanitizing movies to delete content that may offend some people is an "illegitimate business." [...] The judge also praised the motives of the Hollywood studios and directors behind the suit, ordering the companies that provide the service to hand over their inventories.

So this has me wondering If it is Illeagal to "sanitize" these movies for DVD distribution why then isn't it illegal to do so via broadcast distribution... (Whoops there goes seeing the movies in "Prime Time" on TV)....

Of course they can probably get around that with companies buying advert space on the naughty bits area...you know...like a coke logo on a nipple, or meow mix on a crotch ;)

I mean, I know that there is no digital filter int he Japanese cameras, the phallus just gets censored later on. So would that apply to all the hentai that is US bound as well?

US releases of Japanese titles are usually mastered from the original, uncensored footage. Not just hentai. Many anime titles that are considered to be too graphic for Japanese TV/cable/satellite are released uncut on DVD in the US.
