Wow I just had someone forward me a job they want me to apply for as a VP of IT for another school (In Boston).

I've only been here for just about two years, so I wouldn't feel too guilty about leaving. (Although there are aspects of workig here that I would miss, As well as a specific person or two.) It's just starting to feel a little bogged down.

But a VP doen't get down and dirty with the HW and SW (except maybe the first few years at a start-up), and I think I'd miss that, but then there is the chance to implement a "vision" of what the IT resources are and would be. Theres a part of that that feels very apealing to me (And the money wouldn't hurt.) :-)

Hmmm, and then there is this little bit tucked away in the job descirption that makes me wonder "Will also provide leadership for the school library." I have no friggin clue about libraries. (Yeah, I know, that's where they keep the books ok.) ;-)

Over all it makes me happy that one of my friends thinks I could do this kind of job, but there is a little nagging feeling in the back of my head that makes me wonder if I could actually pull it off.

1) You can do it. No question. VPs are not all that much more intelligent, etc., than you. You'd be amazed at what gets promoted to it's level of incompetence. :-)

2) Whatever you'd need to know about libraries you'd learn. Or you could make library data gathering someone else's project, get 'em to report to you what you need to know.

3) If it didn't work out and you found you didn't like it/the money, you could always go back to where you are now, at your current university or any other one. At a higher salary, of course, as they'd have figured out how they simply can't get along without you at your current one.

4) Omigod! DON'T GO!!!!!!!!!

Hmm ok I'll take a stab at these in order
1) I don't want to be the one who's reached his level of incompetence. That's why there is all this self doubt....

2) This would be me reaching the the point of incompetence in item #1

3) Not in this job market. But hopefully like every other institute I've ever worked at getting fired is next to impossible. (It happens, but very rarely.)

4) it wouln't be far. How about lunch.

It also never hurts to have "VP of " on your resume.

to 'opportune' or not

choosing is tough sometimes........sleep on it a few nights and perhaps you'll awake just knowing if the move is right for you or not?
