Yes I know it's Wend. But This is the first day back from my weekend, and the yo-yoing that is my life continues....

So Friday was graduation here. Half my Dept was out, and I had a couple of meetings scheduled and a couple that I needed to arrange. A was sick, and had been for a couple of days. Things worked out pretty well at work, and I got to get out of work a little early so I could run home and get A some cough syrup. I also managed to get over and get the Oil and Tranny fluid checked on my "new" car since B and I were going to NYC to run some errands.

Sat morning I go to pick up the papers for my new car, and let the dealer get the inspection done. This is where things start to go wrong....

The car fails to pass the inspection due to a hole in the muffler. (It had gotten worse over the cousre of the week, and I'm not sure it was there when I left the lot on monday)
The dealer is good and say that they'll take care of it when I get back from NYC next week.
Ok So I head back to B's place and we get the stuff were bringing out to NYC loaded into the back of my SUV, and we get on the road.

We're driving along and everything seemds pretty good I take I90 to I84 to I684 to I287 to I95. (There are less cops on that route and I drive a "little" fast). It's at this point that around 4:30PM Sat afternoon, my "new" car lost its frount/left wheel (not just the tire the whole wheel). I had noticed a little wobble and slowed to about 75Mph, and got into the middle lane on I95. Somehow all of the lug nuts had worked themselves loose, and the wheel left the car and bounced over the median into on comming traffic. As I'm seeing the tire go into the high speed lane, the car tips forward, and crashed onto the wheel hub, and brake rotar. I managed to get the car to the shoulder without any further incident. An NY State trooper was pulled up almost imeadiately and called it in to be towed. Fortunatly no one else ran into the wheel, which the statie went back and retreived for us. The repair shop couldn't start looking at it until monday, which B had already taken off, so I called in and left messages. B and I took the train the rest of the way into Manhatan. I called the repair shop monday morning, and they were going to look at it that day, they jerked me around most of the day and had to order parts so it wasn't ready until tuesday afternoon, but I did manage to get getting my passport taken care of.
At some point I'll need to take it back into the dealer for them to fix what is left, and get them to cover the cost of the repairs.
So much for my quiet weekend....

Two days extra of enforced hanging about twiddling thumbs in the Rotten Apple, which smells like urine on a hot summer's day and feels like being inundated by swarming mongol hordes -- not to mention an $800 car repair bill later -- and your mood is "amused"?????

You are one weird dude, dude. :-) Can I have some of whatever it is you're on?

My mood is annoyed, tired, cranky, and headachey. Which is always how I feel after I visit my mother. But hey, misery doesn't demand company, so I'm glad your mileage varies. :-) No sense in both of us being cranky.

Well, some say I am easily amused, but if I didn't laugh at the sh!t in my life I'd be too dambed upset all of the time.

And so I had two extra days of not doing anything, and if I'm lucky I'll be able to get the dealer to cover the $800.

So, if i get it right:

- You get a car
- Dealer does the inspection, no matter if it fails or pass
- Same day, after driving a bit, car looses a wheel

When they do car inspections, they need to check the brakes. To do this, they need to remove the wheels and inspect the brake pads. After that, they need to put the wheels back and bolt the wheels so drivers don't lose them...

You may want to have a good conversation with your dealer. He was negligent, they didn't do it right; somebody probably forgot to bolt them down. The dealer should pay for the repairs as well as any costs that you had because of the delay in your trip.

You may want to mention the word "lawsuit" and "negligent". They could have killed all of you and the incoming cars. Keep any papers saying that your car was there that day, witnesses, etc... Or in any case, they should have noticed that it was not bolted right, although it is very strange that this just happened just after it was inspected... hmmm.. somebody was too much in a hurry to get out of work.

Good luck... sometimes you have to be a little bit nasty to get your rights.

Car was bought on Monday 6/3, driven to NYC on Saturday, 6/8: 5 days later. So still within the 10 day "lemon law" window that requires the dealership to be responsible for such things.

Dealership did NOT do the inspection: Lensman had to take it to an inspection station.

It did NOT pass inspection because of a hole in the muffler, which the dealer was going to fix upon return. Also was going to provide the spare tire that wasn't in the SUV at the time. :-<

"When they do car inspections, they need to check the brakes. To do this, they need to remove the wheels and inspect the brake pads. After that, they need to put the wheels back and bolt the wheels so drivers don't lose them..."

We thought so too, so figured it was the inspection stations fault. BUT we sadi this to a friend who knows a lot about cars, and they said they DON'T take your tires off. So in this case it's the dealership's fault. In the end. . . who knows? It might be worth it to double check with the inspection station and just ask: "hey, do you remove the lug nuts in the tires when you do inspections?"

But you're right! It is of UTMOST IMPORTANCE that whomever is responsible, they take this part of their job the most seriously. If your engine fails, no biggie: you can coast to the side of the road on momentum for a bit. But this is so LETHAL. I've heard people say "Yeh, but the people they hire to do these things are not the brightest bulbs, so what can you expect?" Bull! It doesn't take brights to do this ONE thing right, especially when it's soooo damned important.

um. . . thanks for letting me butt into your LJ discussion, Lensman. :- ) I know how busy you are.

I remember my car being inspected and they guy calling me in telling me that I needed some new XXX, being by the side of the car that was elevated in one of those things, with the wheels off, on the ground, and the guy pointing to something that I don't have the slightest clue about... Maybe they do it different in PA.

I am so glad that nobody got hurt. You, guys or other cars. But hey, this is not a small thing. It is not like forgetting to stick when the next oil change is due, ya know... "oooppsss.. sorry, I forgot to tighten the screws in your wheels..."

Anyway... the important thing is that you are all OK. And this is priceless!
