I never knew what the "Lucky" button was until now. I assumed all these years that it was part of a partnership with Punch the Monkey for $20.

Yeah, Here is Google's description of what the "luck" button does:

The "I'm Feeling LuckyTM" button automatically takes you to the first web page returned for your query.

An "I'm Feeling Lucky" search means less time searching for web pages and more time looking at them.
